Tombstone

Description

Tombstone made by African-American stone carver, Sebastian "Boss" Hammond (c.1804-1893). Found on the site of the maker's workshop on the border of Carroll and Frederick counties in Maryland. Epitaph reads, "John Marshall/ Son of/ Mason and Charlotte Parsons./ Died/ May 14th, 1835./ Aged 18 months./ Happy voyager/ No sooner launched/ Than arrived at the haven."
