Charles J. P. Schmidt

Description

Oil on canvas portrait painting of Charles J. P. Schmidt (1842-c.1920s), c. 1870-1880, attributed to Hans Heinrich Bebie (1799-1888). Schmidt was born in Darmstadt, Germany and emigrated to the United States in 1864. He became a naturalized citizen in 1866 and married Caroline Götz Schmidt (1842-1930) in 1870. Schmidt worked for many years as a Baltimore cabinetmaker and later a school teacher. The couple had several children.
