John Brown’s letter book

Description

Letterbook of abolitionist John Brown (1800-1859) which contains a handwritten draft of an essay entitled "Sambo Mistakes [sic]." Comprised of three chapters, Brown composed this text circa 1847 for the weekly antislavery newspaper The Ram's Horn published by Willis Augustus Hodges (1815-1890), a Black abolitionist. In this narrative essay, Brown assumes the guise of an African American man who reflects on his misspent life of pursuing trivial objects instead of fighting for equality.
