Ella Nixon and grandchildren

Description

From 1994 to 1996, the Baltimore City Life Museum sponsored a program for a small group of children, ages 10 through 15, who lived in Lafayette Courts and other public housing projects in the Jonestown neighborhood of Baltimore, Maryland. Roland Freeman, a professional photographer, taught some of the children to shoot photographs and develop film. Given 35mm cameras of their own, the children then photographed their families, neighborhood, and homes beginning in the summer of 1994. This photograph was taken as a result of that project, and depicts Ella Nixon standing with her grandchildren Brittany Butler and Brionni Ash as they experiment with their cameras. The image was taken on the 11th floor of 130 North Aisquith Street, one of the high-rises at the former Lafayette Courts housing complex which was demolished in August 1995.
