Portrait of Robert E. Lee

Description

Daguerreotype portrait after a painting of Robert Edward Lee (1807-1870), United States and Confederate States of America soldier. After a long career in the US Army Corps of Engineers and cavalry, he resigned his commission in 1861 and joined the Confederates, commanding the Army of Northern Virginia until 1865. He served as president of Washington College in Virginia from 1865 until his death. In 1831, he married Mary Anne Randolph Custis (1808-1873), daughter of George Washington Parke Custis of Arlington, Virginia. Their children were: George Washington Custis (1832-1913); Mary Custis (1835-1918); William Henry Fitzhugh (1837-1891), married first Mary Tabb Bolling and second Charlotte Georgianna Wickham; Anne Carter (1839-1862); Eleanor Agnes (1841-1873); Robert Edward (1843-1914), married first Charlotte Taylor Haxall and second Juliet Carter; and Mildred Childe (1845-1905).
