Coat
Description
Confederate States Army uniform coat worn by Brigadier General Bradley Tyler Johnson (1829-1903). Long grey coat with two rows of eight brass buttons, some missing. Collar insignia of gold stars indicates rank of full colonel (1862-1864), with one star missing. Standard for confederate officers coats was the gold embroidered trim on the sleeves. Johnson was a pre-war Frederick lawyer, who was a major organizer of confederate militia in Maryland during the first year of the war. From 1861-1864, he served as an officer in the 1st Maryland Regiment (CSA) and participated in all of their battles until he was promoted to brigadier general of cavalry in 1864.
