Ann Sword

Description

Three-quarter-length portrait of Ann Sword (c.1758-liv.1804) of New Castle, Delaware and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania as a young girl. She is portrayed wearing a pink dress with a floral embroidered bodice, half-length sleeves with long ruffled cuffs, and a low wide neckline trimmed with lace. Her brown hair is tied back in a matching pink ribbon and she wears a double strand of pearls around her neck. She holds a small basket of flowers with both hands. In 1783, she married Dr. Nathan Dorsey of Anne Arundel County, Maryland and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
