Medal, Commemorative
Description
Silver, metal, and paper badge produced for the National Star Spangled Banner Centennial, 1914, made by Whitehead & Hoag Co. of Newark, New Jersey. During the week of September 6-13, 1914, the city of Baltimore held a celebration of Francis Scott Key, the Star Spangled Banner, and the victory over the British during the Battle of Baltimore in 1814. It features Key, Fort McHenry, and the Battle Monument. The badge belonged to the donor's aunt, Baltimore author and poet Lucy Meacham Thruston (1862-1938). A member of the Centennial's Historical Committee, she wore this during the festivities at the North Point celebration, and was a vocal advocate for the adoption of the "Star Spangled Banner" as the national anthem of the United States.
